Keygene provides genetic and genomic research. It works for leading vegetable and animal breeders, universities, hospitals and the fermentation and food industry. Keygene’s aim is to support companies and institutes that carry out genetic/genomic research or that seek to enhance the quality of their product through the improvement of the genetic material used in the production process. Based in Wageningen, the Netherlands, Keygene was founded in 1989 by a number of Dutch vegetable seed companies. Their goal was and is to create synergy and higher efficiency in their molecular genetic research programs and thus improve their breeding effort. Early 2005 the Japanese vegetable and flower seed company Takii & Co., Ltd. joined the shareholders group. This now consists of Enza Zaden, De Ruiter Seeds, Rijk Zwaan, Vilmorin Clause & Cie and Takii & Co., Ltd. At the time of its foundation Keygene employed five people. Since then Keygene has grown continuously and several times it has had to expand its facilities considerably. Currently, Keygene employs almost 100 scientists.
