Chicago 2016 - How The Olympics Will Come to Chicago

The Chicago 2016 Bid Committee ("Chicago 2016") is a 501(c)3 corporation whose mission is to seek the privilege of hosting the Games of the XXXI Olympiad in Chicago. Chicago 2016's Board comprises business, civic, athletic, cultural and academic leaders representing Chicago and the surrounding Midwest region. Its honorary chairmen is Chicago Mayor Richard M.. Patrick Ryan serves as chairman and CEO.

On April 14, 2007, the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) selected Chicago as the U.S. Bid City for the 2016 Games. Chicago will now compete with other international cities for the honor of being the official 2016 Host City. The final decision on which international city will host the 2016 Games will be made in October 2009.

Mike Murnane has worked in the marketing and community relations departments of Chicago 2016 since June 2007. He works with local municipal, and county elected officials and is responsible for promoting the vision and concept of Chicago 2016 throughout the region. In order become a host city for the 2016 Olympic Games, it is important for Chicagoland to support the Chicago 2016 efforts. To achieve this, Mike makes it a priority to reach out to the regions various ethnic communities for their participation and partnership during the Olympic experience.

In his early career, Mike spent several years in community development and community relations as a manager of job training programs. He later joined the Illinois Film Office and the Illinois Bureau of Tourism. The promotional work taught Mike how to promote Illinois as a film and television location as well as a destination for travel and tourism, preparing him for his role with Chicago 2016. Before joining the bid committee for Chicago 2016, Mike spent the last few years working in new business development and marketing as an advocate and consultant for growing businesses in the midwest.

Mike graduated from Western Illinois University with a Bachelor of the Arts in communications. His interests outside of work include politics and sports – both playing and watching. Mike’s passion and commitment to Chicago as an Olympic host city is inspirational; he works everyday to spread the vision of Chicago 2016 and promote Chicago as the home of the next Olympics.
